Concussion Testing & Treatment

What is a concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury- or TBI- caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth (CDC).

Symptoms usually resolve in ~ 4 to 6 weeks. 30-40% of patients develop longer lasting symptoms which is referred to as Post-Concussion Syndrome. One of the best indicators for a quick recovery and a positive outcome is how soon someone begins active treatment by a qualified provider after the injury.

Symptoms vary greatly

Physical:

  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Blurred Vision
  • Sleep Disturbance
  • Light/Noise Sensitivity
  • Balance Problems
  • Activity Intolerance
  • Fatigue

Cognitive:

  • Poor attention and concentration
  • Memory problems
  • Mental fog
  • Decreased mental speed/agility

Emotional and Behavioral:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Agitation
  • Irritability
  • Impulsivity
  • Aggression

Our Concussion Testing

VOMs – Vestibular Oculomotor Screening Battery:

Including movement of the eyes in various directions in connection with outside stimulus to screen visual stability during head movement.

Neurolign Dx-100 TM:

Head mounted googles with eye tracking and digital display system. An objective measuring tool for assessing oculomotor and vestibular function with an extensive test battery for comparing baseline to post injury measurements or a more concise battery comparing measurement to normative data following an accident.

Balance Track System

A digitally sensitive standing force plate and integrated software to assess and record the components of balance including vision-biased, proprioception-biased and vestibular-biased measures.

BCTT – Buffalo Concussion Treadmill Test

An endurance test using a treadmill to establish an exertion threshold for cardio-based exercise to safely improve cerebral blood flow.

What is the best treatment after concussion?

Rest for 24-48 hours followed by a gradual return to activity monitored by a trained healthcare provider. This is best done through a functional rehabilitation program which involves evaluation of your symptoms and individualized treatment which may include visions therapy, vestibular therapy, graded activity/exercise, and cognitive therapy.

No two concussions are exactly alike. Treatment should be individualized to your specific symptoms.
