What Is a Concussion?

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury—or TBI—caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move rapidly back and forth.

What is the best treatment after concussion?

Rest for 24-48 hours is typically recommended after a concussion followed by a gradual return to activity monitored by a trained healthcare provider. This is best done through a functional rehabilitation program which involves evaluation of your symptoms and individualized treatment which may include vision therapy, vestibular therapy, graded activity/exercise, and cognitive therapy. No two concussion are exactly alike. Treatment should be individualized to your specific symptoms.

How long do symptoms typically last?

In most cases, symptoms resolve within 4 weeks after a concussion. However, in approximately 30% of cases, symptoms may last longer than 4 weeks which is referred to as Post-Concussion Syndrome. One of the best indicators for a positive outcome and a quick recovery is how soon functional treatment by a qualified provider is initiated after the injury.
